Ghost Cars: Identifying and Clearing Abandoned Vehicles

At high-traffic facilities like airports, transit hubs, and regional hospitals, a parked car generating steady hourly revenue is a great asset. However, a car that has been sitting in the exact same premium parking bay for 45 days is a massive liability. Abandoned vehicles, often referred to in the industry as "Ghost Cars," silently drain your capacity, skew your occupancy data, and pose significant security risks.
The Capacity Drain
Every parking bay in your facility represents a specific daily revenue yield. When a vehicle is abandoned, that yield drops to zero, yet the vehicle continues to occupy physical space. In facilities operating near 100% capacity during peak hours, just five abandoned vehicles can result in hundreds of legitimate customers being turned away over the course of a month.
The Challenge of Detection
In older, ticket-based legacy systems, detecting ghost cars is incredibly labor-intensive. It usually requires a security guard to physically walk the entire lot, checking the date printed on the dashboard tickets of hundreds of vehicles. Because this process is tedious, it is rarely done consistently, allowing abandoned vehicles to sit unnoticed for months, collecting dust and occasionally attracting vandalism.
Furthermore, some "ghost cars" aren't actually abandoned. In many cases, a driver managed to tailgate another vehicle out of the exit gate without paying. Because the system never registered their exit, the fee computer still lists the car as occupying a space, artificially inflating your occupancy statistics and triggering "Lot Full" signs prematurely.
Stale Session Management
