How to Redesign Your Parking Lot Layout to Eliminate Chokepoints

If your facility suffers from constant gridlock, minor fender-benders, and frustrated drivers, the problem might not be your volume—it might be your geometry. Re-striping a parking lot is one of the most cost-effective ways to fundamentally improve traffic flow.

Step 1: Evaluate Angled vs. Perpendicular Parking

The standard 90-degree (perpendicular) parking layout maximizes the total number of bays, but it requires wide driving aisles (typically 24 feet) to allow cars to swing out and reverse safely. It also accommodates two-way traffic, which often leads to standoffs between drivers.

If congestion is severe, consider converting to 60-degree angled parking with strictly one-way aisles. Angled parking is significantly faster and easier for drivers to pull into and back out of. Because the cars are angled, the driving aisle can be reduced to 15-18 feet wide. While you may lose a small percentage of total capacity, the massive increase in traffic fluidity often outweighs the loss of a few bays.

Step 2: Eliminate Dead Ends

A dead-end aisle forces a driver who didn't find a spot to execute a multi-point turn to get out, blocking everyone behind them. Ensure every aisle loops back into a main circulation artery. If structural pillars prevent a physical loop, convert the dead-end spaces into designated motorcycle parking or a pedestrian walkway, leaving enough radius for cars to U-turn easily.

Step 3: Optimize the Entry/Exit Geometry

The approach to your ticket dispensers should be straight and level for at least two car lengths. If drivers have to turn sharply while reaching for a ticket, they will approach slowly and awkwardly, dropping throughput. Ensure there is enough "stacking space" (queue length) between the street and the barrier to prevent backups from spilling onto the public road.
